Fresh analysis suggests that people who come off new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People using these medications need to be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting generally see a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Experts propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.
These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Users who have discontinued the medication explain a intense return of hunger.
"I experienced something activating and you become starving," said a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts caution that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
